Amsterdam Born Children and their Development

Research in the period of infancy is mainly focused on the growth and development of the child. It was found that the mother’s body mass index (BMI) influences the BMI of her 1-year-old child. More research is being conducted to uncover which determinants might influence growth and the risk of obesity in babies and toddlers.

An important aspect of the neurological development of the child, is crying behaviour. Extreme crying is found to be related to a disruption in specific brain structures. Our research shows that this disruption might be influenced by prenatal stress and mood disorders of the mother.
