Childhood

Phase 3 concerns the child’s health, growth and development at age 5 years. In this phase mothers filled in two questionnaires, and the child’s teacher was also asked to fill in a short questionnaire. In addition children’s health and development was assessed during the ABCD consultation at their primary school.

Questionnaires: mother
Mothers received two questionnaires when their child reached it’s fifth birthday. The first questionnaire, which was filled in by 4488 mothers, concerned the child’s health and development. The second questionnaire, wich was aimed to assess children’s dietary habits, was filled in by 2851 mothers.

Questionnaire: teacher
The child’s teacher was asked to fill in a short questionnaire about the child’s school achievement and behaviour at school. 3588 teachers completed this questionnaire.

ABCD consultation
During the ABCD consultation, 3321 children were examined during school time. We have measured their height, weight, waist and hip circumference, heart rate, blood pressure, and cognitive performance. In addition, a few drops of blood were obtained via a finger prick in 2452 children.

ABCD-GE study
With blood collected during at the ABCD-consultation we have genotyped 1,200 Dutch children with the Illumina HumanCoreExome BeadChip. Genome-wide techniques will be applied to investigate the genetic susceptibility and gene-environmental interactions on obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and cognitive and behavioral development disorders in early life and childhood. We collaborate with other national and international researchers on these topics and we work in partnership with other birth cohorts such as the EGG (Early Growth Genetics) consortium and the EArly Genetics and Lifecourse Epidemiology (EAGLE) consortium.

Phase 3b
In addition we have assessed children’s exposure to air pollution, noise and electromagnetic fields in their home and school environment.
